In October, the average monthly air temperature is forecast to exceed the climatic norm by 2–3°C (with norms ranging from 2.4°C in the far southwest to -3.1°C in the far northeast), according to the Komi Center for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring.
Monthly precipitation totals will be close to long-term averages, though they may be 1.5 times higher in certain northern and central districts (the norm is 54–74 mm).
Temperatures are expected to remain above the climatic norm for most of the month, while dropping below it during the first and last five-day periods.
The onset of winter—marked by a sustained shift in the average daily air temperature from above 0°C to below-freezing values—is most likely during the final ten days of October. Snow cover will begin to form around this time, starting in the far northeast.
Given the forecast weather conditions, the early appearance of initial ice formations (such as shore ice and frazil ice) on the republic’s rivers is not expected.
